Department of Mechanical Engineering

Head Of The Department: Dr. Unnikrishnan V. S

Mechanical Engineering is a key engineering domain involved in the study, design and development of mechanical devices and systems towards improving processes and systems in our society. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest in the institute setup in the year 1991with the vision to satisfy the regional, national and international need for technical excellence in the field of mechanical engineering to serve the industry and society.

The department has grown over the past three decades, strengthened its facilities and expertise in four domain areas: Design, Manufacturing, Thermal and Industrial engineering. Some of the specific work areas include Machine Design, Finite Element Methods, Optimization Methods, Material Science, CAD, Vibration Analysis, Production Planning, Thermal Engineering, Heat Transfer, CFD, Bio-fuels, Renewable Energy, Solar Systems, Industrial engineering, Ergonomics and Safety, Career development.

The department has 11 instructional laboratories and is well equipped with latest computational facilities to provide practical exposure and study all areas of mechanical engineering. The department engages in the design and development of products and devices and undertake industry projects to improve mechanical systems and organizational productivity.

SAE, the Society of Automotive Engineers’ RIT Chapter is committed to advancing the engineering profession through its many student programs and activities in coordination with SAEINDIA. This professional platform offers Inter Collegiate Design Competitions whose main purpose is to go beyond textbook theory by designing, building and testing the performance of a real vehicle. SAEINDIA allows students to join other students from across the country in exciting and intense competitions like SUPRASAEINDAI – BAJASAEINDIA – EFFI CYCLE & AERO DESIGN.

HOD's Desk

The department currently offers B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, M.Tech in Industrial Engineering and Management and Ph.D. degree programs, with over 250 undergraduates, 36 post graduates and 2 Ph.D scholars on roll. It is a research centre of APJAKTU and under NDF scheme. The department has over 19 faculty members and 23 technical staff. The Department provides an enriching learning environment and is committed to mould all round development of its students and prepare the manpower that is globally competent. For this, the students are exposed to problems faced by our society, are engaged in outreach programmes and industry institute interactions, are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities and professional development activities beyond the regular academic work. Our graduates have over the years made strong national and global presence in elite industry and eminent academic institutions.
