HOD: Dr. ANILKUMAR C.D.
The Department of Electronics and Communication was established in the year 1991 and is housed in an independent three storeyed building in the campus. The department offers TWO undergraduate programme [4-yr B. Tech] in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), and Robotics & Artificial Intelligence (R & AI) along with TWO Master’s degree program [2-yr M. Tech]. The post-graduate program in Advanced Communication and Information Systems (ACIS) started in 2011, followed by a second program in Advanced Electronics and Communication Engineering (AECE) in 2013.
The new B.Tech programme, R& AI, has been designed as an inter-disciplinary programme with countable participation from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering. This programme was sanctioned to commence classes from the academic year 2022-2023 with a sanctioned in-take of 30. This is the first ever B.Tech programme in this specific field in Kerala.
Admissions for the B. Tech Program are based on rank list prepared by CEE, Govt. of Kerala. The rank list is generated using the score obtained by the student for the entrance examination conducted by Government of Kerala and marks obtained in the qualifying examinations. The department has a total intake of 60 students for the B.Tech in ECE with additional 6 seats for the lateral-entry students, while it is 30 numbers of sanctioned in-take for R&AI with three students admitted through lateral entry in the third semester.
The post graduate program has an annual intake of 18 students in each stream of specialization. Admission to the M. Tech Program is based either on merit or valid GATE score. All these programmes are affiliated to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University.
The department laboratories have the state of art equipment and high-quality lab practices with experienced supporting staff which encourages students to pursue self-developed and innovative project works. The laboratories for R& AI have been set in the dept. of ECE as well as in the departments of ME and EEE.
The department library offers reference books and technical magazines for quick references. There is a full-fledged computer centre in the department with sufficient computing facility having broadband internet connectivity which provides access to journals and e-books for students.
The department periodically organizes seminars and workshops to train faculty and students on emerging research areas and trends in the area of Electronics Engineering. Faculty from premier institutions are invited to deliver lectures under visiting faculty schemes. Apart from faculty development programmes, TEQIP supports Equity Assurance Programme (EAP), which includes remedial classes and scholarships for the students. Industry-Institute Interaction Cell (IIC) of TEQIP scheme regularly conducts workshops & talks by industry experts. The Electronics Association is very active in organizing and conducting technical festivals and project exhibitions. Students are encouraged to participate in intercollegiate technical /cultural competitions organized by other institutions also.
The department was accredited by NBA in 2007-2010, 2016-2019 and 2019-2022, and is all set ready for the next period of accreditation.
The practices recommended by outcome-based education (OBE) are followed in the department and conducts periodic review by class committee, class PTA and department advisory board. Evaluation of faculty by students are performed twice in a semester. Surveys are conducted among students, parents and alumni to evaluate the outcomes achieved.
The department aims to nurture a generation of graduates with professional outlook equipped with in-depth knowledge in Electronics and its related field.
We proudly introduce a U.G. Programme in the trending field of Robotics & Artificial Intelligence (R&AI), the first-ever B.Tech in Kerala in this field. It is the vision of the State Government to produce skillful engineers in this emerging area that has been implemented. Classes commence in the academic year 2022-23. The programme has been designed as an interdisciplinary programme of ECE in association with the departments of Electrical Engineering(EEE), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), and Mechanical Engineering. The future belongs to R&AI.
Nevertheless, B.Tech in ECE is our premier programme and the department aims to inculcate academic knowledge and laboratory exposure to foster proficient electronic-radio-communication engineers. The students are provided with extensive knowledge and ideas from well-trained and dedicated faculty, most of them being PhD holders from premier institutes in the country.
Sponsored research projects investigated by the faculty, and supported by various government and research organizations, have helped the department to take giant leaps in research related activities. The research activities in the department extend across various domains in the field of electronics and communication engineering, which helps the students to imbibe desire for life-long learning.
