The Department of Electronics and Communication was established in the year 1991 and is housed in an independent three storeyed building in the campus. The department offers an undergraduate programme [4-yr B. Tech] in Electronics and Communication Engineering and two Master’s degree program [2-yr M. Tech]. The post-graduate program in Advanced Communication and Information Systems (ACIS) started in 2011, followed by a second program in Advanced Electronics and Communication Engineering (AECE) in 2013.

Admissions for the B. Tech Program are based on rank list prepared by CEE, Govt. of Kerala. The rank list is generated using the score obtained by the student for the entrance examination conducted by Government of Kerala and marks obtained in the qualifying examinations. The department has a total intake of 60 students for the undergraduate program with additional 6 seats for the lateral-entry students admitted in third semester. The UG program in Electronics and Communication Engineering at RIT Kottayam, is among the most sought-after branch of study by the top ranked students in the state of Kerala. The post graduate program has an annual intake of 18 students in each stream of specialization. Admission to the M. Tech Program is based either on merit or valid GATE score. Currently, 15 research scholars, are pursuing their doctoral degree under the supervision of ECE faculty in diverse fields of electronics and communication engineering. All these programmes are affiliated to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University.

The institute has a dynamic Career Guidance and Placement Cell (CGPC) that work dedicatedly towards providing placements for students from reputed companies. The department unit of the CGPC conducts timely guidance and training programmes for students, particularly pre-final year students. Most of the alumni are currently working in reputed in MNCs. Some of them have pursued higher studies in IIT, IISc, IIMs, NITs and top ranked foreign Universities. The faculty of the department are appointed through the selection process of the PSC, Government of Kerala. Majority have acquired their higher qualifications from premier institutions in India.

The department laboratories have the state of art equipment and high-quality lab practices with experienced supporting staff which encourages students to pursue self-developed and innovative project works. The department library offers reference books and technical magazines for quick references. There is a full-fledged computer centre in the department with sufficient computing facility having broadband internet connectivity which provides access to journals and e-books for students.

The department periodically organizes seminars and workshops to train faculty and students on emerging research areas and trends in the area of Electronics Engineering. Faculty from premier institutions are invited to deliver lectures under visiting faculty schemes. Apart from faculty development programmes, TEQIP supports Equity Assurance Programme (EAP), which includes remedial classes and scholarships for the students. Industry-Institute Interaction Cell (IIC) of TEQIP scheme regularly conducts workshops & talks by industry experts. The Electronics Association is very active in organizing and conducting technical festivals and project exhibitions. Students are encouraged to participate in intercollegiate technical /cultural competitions organized by other institutions also.

The department was accredited by NBA in 2007-2010, 2016-2019 and currently for the period 2019-2021. The practices recommended by outcome-based education (OBE) are followed in the department and conducts periodic review by class committee, class PTA and department advisory board. Evaluation of faculty by students are performed twice in a semester. Surveys are conducted among students, parents and alumni to evaluate the outcomes achieved.

The department aims to nurture a generation of graduates with professional outlook equipped with in-depth knowledge in Electronics and its related field.

HOD's Desk

The department aims to inculcate academic knowledge and laboratory exposure to foster proficient electronic-radio-communication engineers. The students are provided with extensive knowledge and ideas from well-trained and dedicated faculty, most of them being PhD holders from premier institutes in the country. The programs are student oriented in both academic as well as non-academic arenas. They are encouraged to participate in technical and non-technical events to develop more confidence and hone their soft and technical skills. Students are motivated to undergo in-plant training and many industrial visits (IV) are arranged every year to get industry exposure. Sponsored research projects investigated by the faculty, and supported by various government and research organizations, have helped the department to take giant leaps in research related activities. The research activities in the department extend across various domains in the field of electronics and communication engineering, which helps the students to imbibe desire for life-long learning.
